Working Toward a Healthier Home? Consider Solar Energy!

‘Can Solar Energy Help Me Live Better, and Combat the Continuous Increase in Utility Costs?’

This is a question that lives in my thoughts as I strive to be a better steward within my home, and within (and for) our natural environment.

At times this is very frustrating for me, as I would like a simple solution! 

Reality for me, however, says that this is going to be an ongoing conversation with myself.  With that in mind I’d like to share some great resources to explore when considering solar installation on an existing home.

• Schedule a home energy assessment. An assessment offers the opportunity to create a higher degree of energy efficiency and indoor air quality exchange by looking at air movement within the envelope of your house. You’ll learn where air is infiltrating your house from the outside, and how air is moving from the inside of your house to the outside.
• Once your assessment identifies how air is moving in and out, you can create and prioritize a strategy from which to remediate these findings, and research options for a high-quality solar installation. (Note: Determining the amount of solar energy needed and/or wanted is related to the efficiency of your home, as well as your lifestyle.)
• Meet with a local solar system expert, ask questions and have a conversation about solar programs appropriate for your home.
  • Keep in mind that solar systems and installation aren’t always straight forward; you may find this could require other considerations, including contracting with a roofing expert.
  • Check out the federal tax credit, state sales tax exemption, and net metering payback from your local utility.
  • Take a look at how solar will affect your short-term and long-term utility costs.
  • Research loan options and where to best look for those.
