Stormy, wet, cold, weather is here. Are you prepared?

As we hear the news of Helene and Milton, and have our own deluge of rain, I wonder if we are all prepared for the stormy, wet, cold, weather ahead? And, what this weather brings?

Taking steps now will ensure we are safe, warm and protected from the elements. It will also ensure that one of our largest investments – our home – is protected.
Take a look at the list below – and take note of items that you should take care of this month:

1. Clean roof and gutters.
2. Clean fireplaces and chimneys.
3. Secure loose items outside like trash cans.
4. Seal doors and windows by checking for drafts.
5. Prepare for power outages: Stock up on flashlights, batteries, rechargeable lamps, candles and matches. Charge electronic devices and consider getting a back up battery.
6. Keep extra blankets, and if possible, invest in a space heater that works without electricity. Check your cold weather gear to make sure it is intact and ready for use.
7. Stock up on essentials like water, non-perishable foods, and medications.
8. Make sure you have a full tank of gas or full battery charge, check tire pressure and windshield wipers.
9. Always bring pets indoors and include their food in your preparedness.
10. Check your homeowner’s insurance to verify you have the coverage needed in case of disaster. If you are unsure what to look for call your insurance agent to schedule a review of your policy. Make sure natural disasters are covered like wind damage (trees falling onto the roof/houses), and confirm whether or not you need flood insurance.
