Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree …

Christmas for me has always been about a real tree; heading out to find the perfect one and then bringing it home for my family’s holiday season.

I have so many memories of these experiences! The hustle and bustle, and the end result of getting it into a tree stand and beautifully trimmed. And then taking it down so we could repurpose it back into the environment.

 

For all of us to consider when selecting a tree this holiday season, I’m taking a dive into how trees benefit our environment.

• Real trees do not create intensive carbon emissions. Artificial trees are highly intense in this area from production to delivery.
• Tree farms are supporting forests and we are supporting tree farmers with the purchase of a tree. These farmers keep the land covered in healthy forest habitat that wildlife depends on to survive. Here’s a fun article from The Nature Conservancy to learn more.
• Once festivities are done the tree can be recycled back into our environment giving it a second life.
• Science has shown that the best way to protect the forest is to use them – carefully. When our forest is sustainably managed, we have the opportunity to cut carbon emissions.
• Healthy forests provide vital benefits for people and nature through clean air, water, wildlife habitat and health soil.
• According to the National Christmas Tree Association, there are about 350,000 acres in production for growing Christmas trees in the U.S. – much of it preserving green space.

Visit a Christmas tree farm:
After the festivities, your tree can be repurposed back into environment.

Purchase a potted tree from a nursery:
A nursery tree can be donated to a park system, school, community garden, etc.

Locate a live Christmas tree rental service:
Tree rental services will deliver and pick up your tree.

Whether your perfect tree comes from a hike in the woods, a Christmas tree farm, or a local nursery, select a real tree that’s not only beautiful but good for nature and even better for the long-term health of the environment.
