While it’s not a conversation that you’ll likely hear around the dining room table or at a social occasion, I believe the concept of, and conversation around, how indoor and outdoor air quality impacts our ability to create a healthy home – and align it with a wellness lifestyle – is extremely important.
I’m learning more about it all the time! The science behind air quality, and the technology we have today to control that quality, is truly amazing compared to just a few years ago.
As I read more about it, there are two factors that impact how our indoor and outdoor air quality affect us as we live in our homes:
#1: We spend about 80% of our time indoors.
#2: Our outdoor air is more polluted than in the past and continues to add pollutants each year.
This illustration makes so much sense to me!
Uncontrolled air flow – as seen in the illustration – is how most homes exchange outdoor and indoor air – i.e. how our house ‘breathes’. Air is leaking out, and leaking in, with little protection from all varieties of environmental hazards. And the costs can be high; both in terms of heating and cooling as well as long-term health care costs of living with unhealthy air quality.
Controlled air flow – using a filter system for the air coming into your home, while exhausting the indoor air through a filtration system as it leaves your home, allows you to have a less contaminated, higher quality of air to breathe.
You’ve heard the acronym HVAC – it stands for heating, venting, air conditioning – and it is a critical part of your home’s air quality. While we often equate HVAC with commercial buildings, the concept is just as important for your home. Managing your home’s air quality leads to a healthier way of living, which also provides peace of mind that you’re doing everything you can to breathe clean air every day.
I’ve found this article on the importance of fresh filtered air to be full of great information – it speaks to the number of contaminants we live with every day, and explains why controlled venting is such a critical piece of your home’s overall air quality and your personal health and wellbeing.
